Best AI SOP Generators Compared (2026)
Free text-to-SOP generators, click-capture tools and the AI built into SOP platforms, compared on inputs, signup and price. Plus the gap between generating an SOP and getting it followed.
SOPCompass makes one of the tools on this list, including a free generator. We’ve kept the comparisons to what each vendor publishes and said where others are the better pick.
An AI SOP generator is a tool that turns a description of how a task is done, a recording of someone doing it, or an existing document into a structured standard operating procedure: purpose, roles, numbered steps and a checklist.
The output is a draft. Whether that draft becomes something your team actually follows depends on what happens next: who checks it, where it lives, who gets assigned to it and who updates it when the process changes. This post compares the generators and then spends time on that second question, because it is where most SOP projects stall.
Three kinds of AI SOP generator
Tools that call themselves “AI SOP generators” work in three different ways. Knowing which kind you are looking at saves a lot of trial and error.
- Text-to-SOP generators. You describe the process in a few sentences and the AI writes the SOP. Fast, works for any kind of task, but only as good as your description.
- Click-capture generators. You do the task on screen while an extension records it, and the tool writes a guide with screenshots. Very accurate for software tasks, not useful for anything that happens off-screen.
- AI inside an SOP platform. The generator is one feature of a larger system that also stores, assigns and maintains the SOP. Usually needs an account or trial.

The free and text-based generators
SOPCompass free AI SOP generator
Our free AI SOP generator takes a two or three sentence description (who does it, what starts it, the steps, the tools) and returns an SOP with purpose, scope, roles, numbered steps, a checklist and what to do when something goes wrong. It fills gaps with [placeholders] instead of inventing details. No signup, 5 generations a day per visitor, and you can copy it or download a Markdown file. We don’t store what you type; it is sent to our AI provider to write the SOP.
Good for: trying the idea on one process before committing to any software. Limits: it is a one-shot draft. It does not ask you follow-up questions, and nothing is saved or assigned.
Waybook free AI SOP creator
Waybook’s page (checked September 2026) describes a free creator that runs in your browser and turns a plain-language description into a formatted SOP with numbered steps and headings. Saving SOPs inside Waybook, assigning them and tracking completion require starting its 7-day free trial. The page notes quality is most consistent in English.
Good for: a quick draft with no account. Limits: export options and usage limits are not stated on the page. See how Waybook compares as a platform in SOPCompass vs Waybook.
Whale free AI SOP generator
Whale’s generator page (checked September 2026) describes a four-step flow: describe the process, the AI drafts the SOP, you edit it and add media, then share or export it to PDF. It lives inside Whale, so you need an account. Whale also lists a free plan with 1 creator and up to 10 members, and a Step Recorder that captures a process as you work, which puts it in both camps.
Good for: teams that may want Whale’s training flows and quizzes later. Limits: paid AI features use monthly AI credits. More in SOPCompass vs Whale.
SweetProcess SweetAI
SweetProcess says (checked September 2026) SweetAI generates step-by-step instructions from a basic idea of the procedure, which you then edit, rearrange and add media or forms to. Using it means signing up for the 14-day free trial, with no credit card needed. SweetProcess also lists AI drafting of a document from its title and a browser plugin that records clicks.
Good for: teams already leaning toward SweetProcess’s all-inclusive plan. Limits: it is not a standalone free tool. See SOPCompass vs SweetProcess.
General AI chat assistants
You can ask any general AI chat assistant to write an SOP. It will produce something that looks right. The risk is that it fills gaps with plausible details that are not how your business works, and the structure changes each time you ask. If you go this route, give it a fixed template (see SOP format) and tell it to mark anything it does not know.
The click-capture generators
Scribe
Scribe’s SOP generator is capture-based: install the extension, click “Start Capture,” do the task, click “Stop Capture,” and Scribe writes a guide with screenshots and text. The desktop app on Pro and Enterprise captures desktop software too. There is a free Basic plan; Pro Team is $13 per seat per month billed yearly with a 5-seat minimum, per Scribe’s pricing page.
Good for: software tasks where the clicks are the process. Limits: it captures what you clicked, not why you clicked it or what to do when the screen looks different. Read Scribe alternatives for more on that trade-off.
Tango
Tango works the same way: click through the process and it builds a guide with screenshots, annotations and descriptions. It lists voice transcription and AI-generated content, and Enterprise adds on-screen walkthroughs. The free plan allows up to 10 users per workspace and 5 shared workflows; Pro is $15 per user per month for 3 or more users, billed annually, per Tango’s pricing page.
Good for: software training, especially if you want in-app guidance later. Limits: same as any capture tool for off-screen work. See SOPCompass vs Tango.
AI inside SOP platforms
Trainual
Trainual’s AI drafts a process or policy from a description and can generate test questions from your content. It sits inside a full training platform with training paths, e-signatures, SSO and mobile apps. Trainual does not publish prices and points you to a demo; it lists a one-time $1,000 implementation fee. See Trainual alternatives.
Process Street
Process Street lets you create a workflow with AI, and the output is a runnable checklist with form fields, conditional logic and approvals rather than a document. Prices are not published; the Pro plan has a 14-day free trial with no credit card. See SOPCompass vs Process Street.
SOPCompass AI assistant
Inside SOPCompass, the AI assistant works differently from a one-shot generator. It interviews you, by text or voice, asking follow-up questions about the steps, the exceptions and the reasons, and drafts the SOP from your answers. On an existing SOP it proposes edits. Everything it writes waits for a person to approve it. You can also import Word, PDF, Markdown or an audio recording. For software tasks, the SOPCompass Capture Chrome extension turns clicks into steps with screenshots, and AI can rewrite the step wording before you publish. You can also record your screen or upload a video: the AI drafts the steps and the original video stays in the SOP, with Watch this step on each step. And it can draft quiz questions from any SOP for an editor to approve.
Good for: processes that live in someone’s head and need drawing out, with click capture for the software steps. Limits: no free plan (14-day trial, then $99 a month on Team), capture in the browser only (no desktop apps), and a newer product than most here. Full pricing on the pricing page.
A generator is not a system
Generating an SOP takes seconds now. That was never the hard part. SOP projects usually fail after the draft exists, for four reasons.
1. The draft is generic. A generator only knows what it is told. A three-sentence prompt yields a plausible, generic procedure. The details that make an SOP useful (the refund threshold that needs a manager, the client who always wants a call instead of an email) come from asking the person who does the work. That is why an interview beats a prompt for anything involving judgment.
2. Nobody approves it. An AI draft that goes straight into a shared folder carries mistakes with it. Someone who knows the work should read and approve every draft before anyone follows it.
3. It lives nowhere in particular. A downloaded file in someone’s drive is not a library. People need to find the current version in the same place every time, organized in a way they already understand. SOPCompass uses a fixed structure for this (Company plus five business pillars); other tools let you design your own folders or boards.
4. Nobody is told to follow it, and nobody updates it. An SOP gets followed when someone is assigned to it with a due date, and it stays correct when it has an owner and a review date. Without assignments, owners and version history, a generated SOP is accurate on the day it was written and drifts from there.
So when you compare generators, compare what happens on day two: approval, storage, assignment, ownership and review. A free generator is a fine way to see what AI output looks like. A system is what keeps the output true.
Which generator should you use?
- You want to try it with no commitment: the SOPCompass free AI SOP generator or Waybook’s free creator. Both work without an account.
- Your SOPs are mostly software clicks: Scribe or Tango, both with free plans.
- You want AI plus training paths and quizzes: Whale, Trainual or SweetProcess.
- You want AI that produces a runnable checklist: Process Street.
- The process lives in the owner’s head and needs drawing out: an interview-based assistant. That is the approach SOPCompass takes, and our guide to getting the business out of the owner’s head explains the method whatever tool you use.
Whichever you pick, feed it real detail. Our guides on how to write an SOP and how to document business processes cover what a generator needs from you to produce something worth approving. For the broader software picture, see best SOP software in 2026.
