Capture extension FAQ

What the Chrome capture extension records, what it never records, how it connects to your account and who needs it.

Updated

SOPCompass Capture is an optional Chrome extension for editors. It records a web task as steps with screenshots, and nothing is published until you review it in SOPCompass.

For installation, connecting and the full privacy detail, see The Chrome capture extension.

Common questions

What does the capture extension do?

You do a task once in any web app, such as your CRM, and SOPCompass Capture turns each click, choice and field you fill in into a step with a screenshot and a highlight box. You review and edit the steps in SOPCompass before anything is published.

Which browsers does it work in?

Google Chrome and other Chromium browsers such as Edge, Brave and Arc, on a computer. It doesn't work in Safari or Firefox, or on phones.

Is it in the Chrome Web Store?

Not yet. For now you download it from the Capture page in the app and add it with Chrome's Load unpacked option. It takes about a minute; the Chrome capture extension article in Integrations walks through it.

Does everyone on my team need it?

No. Only editors who want to record web tasks need it. Viewers never do.

Does it record what I type?

No. A field becomes a step such as 'Type into Email', never the value. Password, card number, security code, one-time code and other credential fields are skipped entirely and masked in any screenshot taken while they hold a value.

Could a screenshot contain something sensitive?

Yes. A screenshot shows whatever is visible in the tab, such as a customer's details. Review every screenshot before publishing and delete any that shouldn't be shared. When a payment form from a provider like Stripe or PayPal is on screen, the step is saved without a screenshot.

When is it recording?

Only while a capture you started is running, and only in the tab you started in plus tabs it opens. A bar at the bottom right of the page shows that capturing is on and counts the steps, and you can pause or stop at any time.

Does the extension have my password?

No. You connect it by approving it in a SOPCompass tab where you are already signed in. The extension gets a separate access that lasts 8 hours, can only create captures, and can't read, edit or publish your SOPs.

Who can see my captures?

Only you, until you publish. Unpublished captures wait on the Capture page for your review.

Can the AI clean up the wording?

Yes, optionally, on the review page after you stop recording. You can use it up to 20 times a day.

What can't it capture?

Clicks inside embedded frames, Chrome's own pages, the Chrome Web Store and PDFs. Captures are limited to 200 steps each and 20 captures a day per person.

How do I disconnect it?

Use Disconnect in the extension's popup, or Disconnect the extension everywhere on the Capture page in the app.
