Importing from other tools
Every import becomes a draft you review before it is saved. What each file type does, the limits, and how to bring content from Google Docs and other tools.
On this page
SOPCompass imports files rather than connecting to other tools. Every import produces a draft you review before anything is saved, and the review tells you what the conversion left out and what it had to infer.
File types
| File | How it is read | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Word (.docx) |
Converted in your browser, then drafted by the AI | The older .doc isn’t supported; save it as .docx first |
| Sent to the AI as a document, so layout, tables and screenshots inform the steps | Scanned PDFs work when the pages are legible | |
Markdown (.md), text (.txt), HTML (.html), CSV |
Read as text and drafted by the AI | Rich Text (.rtf) isn’t supported |
Audio (.mp3, .m4a, .wav, .ogg, .webm, .aac, .flac and others) |
Transcribed in your browser, then drafted from the transcript | The audio itself is never uploaded |
Video (.mp4, .mov, .m4v, .webm and others) |
Uploaded and kept in the card; the AI writes steps from the screen and the narration | Up to 500 MB |
Documents and audio files can be up to 32 MB. Split larger files and import the parts.
Import a document or recording
- Open the pillar, find the library the SOP belongs in and press Import on it.
- Pick a file. For audio, a speech model (about 60 MB) downloads to your browser the first time and transcribes the recording on your computer.
- Review the draft: the title, a summary of what was dropped or inferred, and each card with its steps. Choose the departments it is for.
- Save. The whole SOP is created in one go; nothing is written before this.
The draft keeps lists, bold and italic text and tables in card bodies, and turns implied actions into numbered steps. Images and clickable links from the original aren’t copied in, so add screenshots and links in the SOP afterwards if you need them.
Import a video
Use Or start from a video when creating a new SOP, or Add from video on an existing SOP. You can record your screen in the browser or upload a file, such as a Loom or Zoom recording.
- The video is uploaded (resumably, so a flaky connection doesn’t restart it) and stays in the card.
- Narration is transcribed on your computer for videos up to 300 MB. For larger videos, paste a transcript if you have one, or the steps are written from what is on screen alone.
- Each step gets its start time, so readers can press Watch this step to jump to it.
Bringing content from other tools
| From | Do this |
|---|---|
| Google Docs | File › Download › Microsoft Word (.docx), then import the file. PDF also works. |
| Microsoft Word | Import the .docx directly. |
| Notion, Confluence or a wiki | Export or download the page as Markdown, HTML, Word or PDF, then import it. |
| Other SOP tools (for example Whale, Trainual, Scribe) | Use whatever export or print to PDF the tool offers, then import the files. For click-by-click web guides, re-recording with the capture extension usually gives better results. |
| Loom, Zoom or screen recordings | Download the video file and use Add from video. |
| Knowledge in someone’s head | Use the AI interview (Build with AI), by text or voice, or record them talking it through and import the audio. |
Note: There is no live sync with Google Drive, SharePoint, Dropbox or another SOP tool. An import is a one-time copy; after that, the SOP lives and is edited in SOPCompass.

Common questions
Who can import?
Editors, admins and owners, into a library of their own workspace. Imports are on every plan.
Can I import into an existing SOP?
Documents and audio create a new SOP. Videos can go either way: start a new SOP from a video, or use Add from video on an existing SOP to add a card to it.
Why was part of my document left out?
The import is built to produce steps people can follow, so it drops document furniture such as cover pages, tables of contents, page numbers and revision tables. The review screen lists what was dropped and what was inferred, so you can add anything back.
Is there a bulk import?
Not in the app; imports are one file at a time. For a large migration, email support@ironbridgeaiadvisory.com first.
Can I import through the API?
On Business, POST /sops creates an SOP from Markdown or plain text, which suits scripted migrations. It is marked as a draft, but everyone in the workspace can see it right away. See Zapier, Make and n8n and the API section.
