The SOPCompass Capture Chrome extension
Do a task once in your browser and get a step for every click, choice and field, with a screenshot of each. Nothing is published until you review it.
On this page
SOPCompass Capture is a Chrome extension that turns a task you do in a web app into a step-by-step guide. Each click, choice and field you fill in becomes a step with a screenshot, and the element you used is outlined. You review everything in SOPCompass before it is published.
You need the editor, admin or owner role in the workspace you capture into.
Install the extension
The extension is not on the Chrome Web Store yet, so it is installed by hand. It takes about a minute.
- In SOPCompass, open the Capture a workflow page (on any SOP, click More, then Capture with the Chrome extension).
- Click Download the extension and unzip it. Keep the folder somewhere it will not be deleted, like Documents.
- In Chrome, go to
chrome://extensions. - Turn on Developer mode at the top right.
- Click Load unpacked and choose the unzipped
sopcompass-capturefolder. - Click the puzzle piece icon in the toolbar and pin SOPCompass Capture.
The Capture a workflow page shows Installed when it detects the extension. To update later, download it again, replace the folder and click the reload arrow on the extension’s card in chrome://extensions.
Connect it to your account
- Click the SOPCompass Capture icon and click Connect.
- A SOPCompass tab opens and asks Connect SOPCompass Capture? Click Connect.
You never type a password into the extension. The connection lasts 8 hours, can only create captures, and cannot read or change your SOPs. When it expires, the extension asks you to Reconnect; nothing captured so far is lost.
Capture a task
- Open the page where the task starts.
- Click the extension icon.
- Pick the Workspace, then where the guide goes:
- Existing SOP: search for it and pick it. The capture is added as a new card.
- New SOP: pick a Library and enter a New SOP title.
- Optionally name the guide, then click Start capture.
- Do the task as you normally would. A small bar at the bottom right shows Capturing and the step count, with Pause and Stop.
- Click Stop and review.
Steps read like “Click “Save”“, “Check “Remember me”” or “Choose “Closed Won” in “Stage”“.
Review and publish
The review page opens in SOPCompass. From here you can:
- Edit each step’s title (“What this step does”) and instructions.
- Click Add context to add a note: why it matters, what to watch out for, who approves it.
- Reorder steps with the arrow buttons, or Alt plus the up and down arrow keys.
- Add a step below, Remove screenshot, Remove the box, or delete a step.
- Click Rewrite the wording with AI to turn the recorded actions into clearer instructions. Check the result; Undo rewrite puts your wording back.
- Change where it is published under Publish into, and set the Guide title.
When it looks right, click Publish. Adding to an existing SOP saves a restore point first. A new SOP gets its library’s departments, which you can change on the SOP. To throw it away, click Discard capture.
Captures waiting for review are listed on the Capture a workflow page under Waiting for your review. Only you can see your captures until you publish them.
What is and is not recorded
Recorded: what you clicked, which field you filled in, which option you chose, the page title and the page address (without anything after a ? or #, and with record ids replaced), and a screenshot of the visible tab.
Never recorded:
- What you type. A field becomes “Type into Email”, nothing more.
- Password, card number, security code, one-time code and similar fields. They are skipped, and masked in any screenshot taken while they hold a value.
- Email addresses, phone numbers and long numbers in labels and page titles, which are replaced with placeholders.
Screenshots are taken only while a capture is running, only in the tab you started in and tabs it opens, and never while a payment provider’s form is showing. The capture bar is always visible when screenshots are being taken.
Important: Anything else visible on the page, such as a customer’s details, will be in the screenshot. Remove that screenshot in review if it should not be shared.
Limits
- 20 captures a day per person, and 200 steps per capture.
- 20 AI rewrites a day per person.
Disconnect
Click Disconnect in the extension, or Disconnect the extension everywhere on the Capture a workflow page to cut off every browser at once.
Common questions
Which browsers does it work in?
Google Chrome 116 or later, and other Chromium browsers such as Edge, Brave and Arc.
Does it record what I type?
No. A text field becomes a step like "Type into Email", never the value. Password, card number, security code and one-time code fields are skipped, and masked in screenshots.
Does it work in desktop apps?
No, only in the browser. For a desktop app, record your screen or upload a video instead.
Which plans include it?
Every plan. Anyone with edit access to a workspace can capture into it.
