Screen recordings, video imports and "Watch this step"
Show a process on screen and talk it through. You get written steps with screenshots, and every step can jump to its moment in the video.
On this page
Recording yourself doing a task once is often faster than writing it. SOPCompass finds the moments the screen changed, writes a step for each with a screenshot, and keeps the original video in the SOP.
This works for anything on your screen, including desktop apps. For web apps, the Capture extension is another option.
Start from a new SOP
- On a pillar, click + SOP in a library.
- Pick the departments. The title is optional; the draft suggests one.
- Under Or start from a video, choose Record a process or Upload a video (Loom, Zoom or any video file).
Add to an existing SOP
- Open the SOP.
- Click Add from video.
- Choose Record a process or Upload a video.
The result is added as a new card, and a restore point is saved first.
Recording
- Click Record a process. Your browser asks which screen, window or tab to share, and whether to use the microphone.
- Do the task and talk through what you are doing and why. With the microphone off, only the screen is recorded; you can paste a transcript instead.
- Click Stop and write the steps. Nothing uploads until you stop.
Uploading
Choose a file such as .mp4, .mov or .webm. Narration in the video is picked up automatically. You can also click Add a transcript (optional) to paste narration you already have.
For a video over 300 MB, narration is not transcribed. You can paste a transcript, or have the steps written from the screen alone.
Review the draft
SOPCompass finds the frames where the screen changed, uploads screenshots, transcribes the narration and writes the steps. Then you review:
- The SOP title (for a new SOP) and the card’s title.
- Each step’s title and instructions.
- Drop this step to remove one.
- Remove the box to take off a highlight box the AI placed.
To save, click the button that names the step count, for example Create the SOP with 6 steps for a new SOP, or Add 6 steps to this SOP for an existing one. Nothing is saved before that.
Keeping the video
Keep the original video at the top of the card is on by default. The video uploads in the background while you review. If it does not finish, you can Try the video upload again or Save without the video.
Videos up to 500 MB are kept. A larger video still becomes a written guide without the video.
Watch this step
When the video is kept, each step gets a Watch this step button with a time. Clicking it plays the card’s video from just before that step happened.
Tips
- Narrate. Your words shape the written steps: approvals, warnings and why you chose an option.
- Keep recordings to one procedure.
- Speech transcription runs in your browser and uses an English speech model. The first time, it downloads the model (about 60 MB), which is then cached.
Common questions
How big can a video be?
Videos up to 500 MB are kept in the SOP. A bigger file still becomes a written guide; only the video is left out, and you are told before you review.
Is my narration uploaded to be transcribed?
No. Speech is transcribed in your browser, on your own machine. The video file itself is uploaded so it can play in the SOP.
Do people with a share link see the video?
Yes, the video plays on the share page. "Watch this step" is only in the signed-in reader.
