Split one SOP into several
Move some of an SOP's cards into a new SOP in one step, and undo it from History if you change your mind.
On this page
Many businesses have one long document called something like “Admin processes” that really holds several unrelated procedures. Splitting turns it into focused SOPs so each one can have the right departments and pillar.
For example, Northgate Events (example) had one “Admin & Finance” SOP with a card for COI paperwork, a card for payroll and a card for parking reimbursements. Splitting made payroll and reimbursements their own Finance SOPs and left the COI paperwork where it was, for Operations.
Split an SOP
You need at least two cards in the SOP, and edit access.
- Open the SOP.
- Click More, then Split into a new SOP.
- Enter a New SOP title.
- Under Cards that move into it, tick the cards to move. At least one card has to stay behind.
- Under Where it goes, pick a library, or create a new one in any pillar.
- Pick its Departments.
- Click Split it out.
SOPCompass saves a restore point on the original first, then moves the cards in one step.
What happens to comments and progress
- Comments pinned to steps that move stay on the original SOP, no longer pinned to a step.
- Reading progress on moved steps starts fresh.
Splits suggested by AI sort
On the Business plan, AI sort may say an SOP “looks like several separate procedures” and list the parts it suggests. Click Split it to open the split with those parts filled in. You go through them one at a time (Split it out or Skip this part), and finish by naming and tagging what stays.
Undo a split
Open the original SOP, click More, then History, and restore the version from before the split. That brings the cards back. Then archive the new SOP by hand.
